Questions & Answers

Questions from Chicago Sun-Times (18)

What is your biggest difference with your opponent(s)?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

Better experience.

My opponent publicly proposed closing streets around Wrigley Field on game days for security.  I would have handled it completely differently.  I would have worked with other officials to come up with a confidential security plan and implemented it before tipping off the enemy rather than announcing it first and waiting until after disaster strikes to implement it.

My opponent has both of his District offices in Chicago in the eastern half of the District.  The western half of the District is in the suburbs.  I would establish one office in the suburbs and one in the City.  I would represent the suburban residents of the District equally with the city dwellers.

My opponent proposes keeping all diagonal runways open at O'Hare.  I am a pilot, so I know that that's not going to happen.  Instead, I would work with the FAA from a pilot's perspective to spread noise around better using the parallel runways

Congress has declined to formally authorize America’s undeclared war against ISIS. Should Congress take a vote to authorize the use of military force against ISIS?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

Such a vote is not necessary.  What we need is action, not rhetoric.  Action is what we are doing, so I'm fine with that.

More generally, what should Congress do to reduce the threat of ISIS abroad and at home?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

Eliminate the Christian Taliban in the United States Military.  Throughout our Armed Forces, leaders are coercing soldiers to become Christians by insisting that you have to get stupid on Jesus in order to be a good soldier.  As a result, ISIS regards the American military as engaging in a holy war on Islam.  Our military leaders need to end the proselytizing so ISIS will no longer be able to justify war on America as defending Islam from the Christians.

Donald Trump has called for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration. Do you support such action? What restrictions, if any, do you support on the admission of Muslims into the United States?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

All prospective immigrants should be treated the same, regardless of religion.

The United States’ nuclear deal with Iran turned one year old on July 14, 2016. Should the deal be maintained as it is, revised or scrapped completely? What is right or wrong with the Iran deal? And should the next president feel bound by it?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

As a civilian, I have not had access to experts on the subject, so I am not in a position to make an informed decision.  This is not the kind of issue for which one should shoot from the hip.  I would need to study all aspects of the matter and receive a variety of expert recommendations before making a decision.

Should the United States build a physical wall along our nation’s entire border with Mexico? Should a “path to citizenship” be created for the millions of people already living here without proper documentation? Would you support legislation to prevent the deportations of so-called “Dreamers” — youth who came to the U.S. illegally as small children with their parents?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

If any foreigner wants to come here and help us pay off our national debt, I'm all for it.

Federal judges in July ruled against voter identification laws in Wisconsin and Texas, concluding that they disproportionately impact minority voters and violate the U.S. Voting Rights Act. Should voters be required to show a photo ID when voting? And should the federal government have a say in this, or is it strictly a matter for the individual states to decide?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

Republicans are notorious for enacting laws that are solely for the purpose of suppressing votes by non-Republicans.  These laws have nothing, whatsoever, to do with voting integrity so, yes, the federal government should be involved in stopping Republican Party dirty tricks.

Should all or certain federal public lands, including national parks, wildlife refuges and forests, be given to states to control? Do you support the opening of public lands and the outer continental shelf to exploration for oil and other fossil fuels, even if those resources are not immediately developed?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

No and No.

What changes, if any, to the U.S. tax code do you support and why?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

Get rid of the income tax and replace it with a consumption tax.  If you spend $20,000 in a year, you would pay a consumption tax (value added tax or federal sales tax) on $20,000 worth of purchases.  If a rich person spends half a million dollars in a year, he or she would pay consumption taxes on $500,000 worth of purchases.  No wiggling out of it with exemptions.  No evading taxes with accounting tricks or lawyer tricks, like shifting income or profits overseas.  Since rich people could no longer evade the taxes that the rest of us pay, this would ensure that the wealthy really do pay their fair share and we pay less because we aren't paying their share, any more.

This would also end the nightmare and the con games related to filing income tax returns.  The Cayman Islands have no income tax.  They use the value added tax, instead, and have no problem getting everybody to pay their fair share in a simple, understandable and fair way that doesn't consume huge quantities of your time.  We should adopt their system.

What are the most important actions Congress can take to ensure the solvency of Social Security?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

Ensure that revenue matches expenditures instead of the current system where expenditures far exceed revenue.

The Republican Party platform defines marriage as between a man and a woman. What is your view? The Obama Administration has issued guidelines to schools, saying they must allow transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity. What is your view? And do you believe parents of LGBT children should be allowed to force their children into conversion therapy?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

Every unmarried adult should have the right to marry any other unmarried, unrelated and willing adult, because that's their family.

The handful of trans kids should be allowed to use whatever bathroom or locker room they want.  The reality is that it's just no big deal to the other kids.  What they really want is for the trans kids to be left alone by the adults so that the trans kids can do what they are comfortable doing.  Since there is so much nudity available on the internet, everybody's seen everything, anyway, so it's just not a big deal to the other kids if a trans kid is standing next to them.  They are way too busy doing what they need to do to be worried or concerned about who is standing next to them.

I would sponsor a Bill to ban Conversion Therapy.  That way, parents of LBGT kids wouldn't have to worry about such therapy because it wouldn't be available.

What is the single most important action Congress can take to reduce U.S. gun violence?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

Encourage every able-bodied adult to conceal carry.  That way, if anybody pulls out a gun for an improper purpose, that person could be eliminated immediately.  Problem solved!

The “Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act” would give the Department of Justice authority to keep suspected terrorists on the federal “no fly” list from buying firearms. The bill was voted down in Congress late last year but pushed again in June after the Orlando massacre of 49 people. Do you support or oppose this bill, and why?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

I oppose the Bill.  If every able-bodied adult packed heat, we could immediately neutralize any terrorist who tries to shoot up the community.

Should Obamacare be repealed, left intact, or changed — and if so, how?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

I am open to listening to all options and choosing the best one for ensuring health care for all at a reasonable cost.

A plan to replace Obamacare, presented by House Speaker Paul Ryan in June, would gradually increase the eligibility age for Medicare, which is now 65. Starting in 2020, the Medicare age would rise along with the eligibility age for full Social Security benefits, eventually reaching 67. Do you support this change in the eligibility age for Medicare?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

There should be multiple plans so Americans can choose whichever option works best for their situation.

The GOP platform opposes the use of public funds for Planned Parenthood and other groups that “perform or advocate” abortion. It also opposes funding health care that includes abortion coverage. In contrast, the Democratic Party’s platform called for continued funding of Planned Parenthood and repeal of the Hyde Amendment, which bars the direct use of federal funds to pay for abortion. Where do you stand?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

The solution is sex education for all starting at an early age, such as kindergarten.  That would greatly reduce the incidence of unplanned pregnancy, thus solving the problem.  Kids should be taught that sex is a normal and wonderful part of a healthy life, but you need to do certain things to prevent unplanned pregnancy.  We should also teach girls, from an early age, the top three rules regarding sex:  1. Boys lie to get what they want.  2. Boys lie to get what they want, and 3. Boys lie to get what they want.

President Obama has proposed making two years of community college free nationally. Do you support or oppose this proposal? If you support it, how would you have the nation pay for it?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

Our taxes are high enough, already, without adding yet another situation where one group of citizens get a benefit and another group of citizens get stuck paying the bill, so I oppose it.  If you want to go to college, that's great, but you need to pay for it yourself instead of sticking your neighbors with the cost of your college tuition.

College costs have risen at twice the rate of inflation for about 30 years. What is driving this increase and what should be done about it?
Answer from Rob Sherman:

Refusal by college students and their parents to Just Say No to institutions that charge too much.  If students and their parents refused to enroll at colleges that charge too much, prices would come down.
