Questions & Answers

Questions from Chicago Sun-Times (18)

What is your biggest difference with your opponent(s)?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

Real Economic Development, Crime Bill, Budget deficit spending, Social Security, Medicare reform, and the plight of our neighborhoods.

Congress has declined to formally authorize America’s undeclared war against ISIS. Should Congress take a vote to authorize the use of military force against ISIS?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

I wouldn't move to a permanent decision quickly. I would first weigh out other options.

More generally, what should Congress do to reduce the threat of ISIS abroad and at home?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

At home:

The vetting process must improve.

We must gain better intelligence.

Donald Trump has called for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration. Do you support such action? What restrictions, if any, do you support on the admission of Muslims into the United States?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

No ,I will not support such action. I will support extreme vetting.

The United States’ nuclear deal with Iran turned one year old on July 14, 2016. Should the deal be maintained as it is, revised or scrapped completely? What is right or wrong with the Iran deal? And should the next president feel bound by it?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

We need an anywhere, anytime, inspection. We've got a complex system that allows Iran to delay inspection.

Iran's right to have its own nuclear reactions, but not to develop an indigenous capacity to enrich nuclear fuel.

Should the United States build a physical wall along our nation’s entire border with Mexico? Should a “path to citizenship” be created for the millions of people already living here without proper documentation? Would you support legislation to prevent the deportations of so-called “Dreamers” — youth who came to the U.S. illegally as small children with their parents?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

I do not support building a wall. A path to citizenship should be available to immigrants who have not committed criminal acts. Yes, I will support legislation to protect deportation of "Dreamers." I will put a 18 month moratorium on all illegal immigrants. illegal immigrants must register with immigration or face deportation.

Federal judges in July ruled against voter identification laws in Wisconsin and Texas, concluding that they disproportionately impact minority voters and violate the U.S. Voting Rights Act. Should voters be required to show a photo ID when voting? And should the federal government have a say in this, or is it strictly a matter for the individual states to decide?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

I would like to do further research on this.

Should all or certain federal public lands, including national parks, wildlife refuges and forests, be given to states to control? Do you support the opening of public lands and the outer continental shelf to exploration for oil and other fossil fuels, even if those resources are not immediately developed?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

Federal public lands should not be given to state control.

I support the opening of public lands for exploration.

What changes, if any, to the U.S. tax code do you support and why?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

I support Republican Senator Ryan Pauls flat tax plan. This would allow a family of four whose household income is under 45K to pay $0.00 taxes.

What are the most important actions Congress can take to ensure the solvency of Social Security?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

I'd like to restructure the way the government runs social security retirement funds. Currently, your social security payroll tax deductions are at 12.4%. I would legislate laws that allow the next generation to invest 6.2% of their pretax payroll deductions into private investments of their choice, with no government regulations. The remaining 6.2% paid by your employer, would be invested by the government into a social security retirement plan.

The Republican Party platform defines marriage as between a man and a woman. What is your view? The Obama Administration has issued guidelines to schools, saying they must allow transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity. What is your view? And do you believe parents of LGBT children should be allowed to force their children into conversion therapy?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

I believe marriage is between a man and women. I would support separate bathrooms assigned to transgender children, but I will not support transgender children using the bathroom that matches their gender identity in school. I support adult transgenders in a public sector using same bathrooms. I do not support LGBT parents being forced to put their children in conversion therapy. No one has the God given rights to force anyone to go against their free will.

What is the single most important action Congress can take to reduce U.S. gun violence?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

We must legislate laws that would charge activities of gang members and mass shootings as terrorist acts. Homeland Security would be able to use the invoked safety exception rule. The Same rule used for the Boston Marathon bombing. This law will have pre-emptive power. We must mandate a law in all 50-states that implement background checks and registration process at gun stores and gun shows.

The “Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act” would give the Department of Justice authority to keep suspected terrorists on the federal “no fly” list from buying firearms. The bill was voted down in Congress late last year but pushed again in June after the Orlando massacre of 49 people. Do you support or oppose this bill, and why?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

Yes, I support this Bill. If you are a suspected terrorist, all actions to apprehend you should be pre-emptive. We must always protect our American Citizens. This bill will not affect the 2nd amendment.

Should Obamacare be repealed, left intact, or changed — and if so, how?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

No. I want to restructure the Bill. I would look at the concept that Blue Cross Blue Shield is proposing. It's called Base Performance Reward. Insurance Companies would pay medical Doctors based only on their performance and results.

A plan to replace Obamacare, presented by House Speaker Paul Ryan in June, would gradually increase the eligibility age for Medicare, which is now 65. Starting in 2020, the Medicare age would rise along with the eligibility age for full Social Security benefits, eventually reaching 67. Do you support this change in the eligibility age for Medicare?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

I do not support this proposal because the plan doesn't discuss how many people would be covered compare to the ACA, or how much participants would have to pay, and how much the proposal would cost. I'm also concerned about how many people would lose their coverage.

The GOP platform opposes the use of public funds for Planned Parenthood and other groups that “perform or advocate” abortion. It also opposes funding health care that includes abortion coverage. In contrast, the Democratic Party’s platform called for continued funding of Planned Parenthood and repeal of the Hyde Amendment, which bars the direct use of federal funds to pay for abortion. Where do you stand?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

I support funding for Planned Parenthood, but I am not in agreement with federal funds going toward abortion.

President Obama has proposed making two years of community college free nationally. Do you support or oppose this proposal? If you support it, how would you have the nation pay for it?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

College costs have risen at twice the rate of inflation for about 30 years. What is driving this increase and what should be done about it?
Answer from John F. Morrow:

The increase in government-guaranteed student loans over the last 30-years and the depletion of subsidized guaranteed loans for private banks is the main cause of college cost inflation.
