Biography

I am a lifelong resident of Madison County, Illinois.  I attended elementary school at S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Grade School located in Collinsville, Illinois, my hometown.  I graduated from Collinsville High School in 1986.  I went on to attend and play basketball at Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois (College home of President Ronald Reagan) where I stayed for two years before transferring to Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois.  I graduated from ISU with a B.S. degree in Sociology.  After college I went to work for Madison County as a Juvenile Probation Officer where I was the first officer hired to start up the Home Detention Program for juvenile offenders.  After two years working for the Madison County Probation Department I enrolled full time at St. Louis University School of Law where I received my J.D. Degree.

Upon graduating from SLU Law School I went to work as an associate attorney for Tognarelli and Levo, P.C. in Collinsville as well as becoming a part-time Assistant State’s Attorney for Madison County.

In 1998, I opened my first solo law office, Barberis Law Office, which was a general practice firm located in Collinsville, Illinois.  I later moved that office to Edwardsville, Illinois where I handled title work for a large title company in addition to operating my general practice office.

In 2001, I took on a partner and together opened Barberis & Bradford, Attorneys at Law which lasted until 2010.  At that time, I opened my second solo practice, Law Office of John B. Barberis, Jr., Attorney at Law.

In 2014, I was elected to the Circuit Bench in Madison County where I am currently the only republican Circuit Judge.  As judge, I preside over many different types of civil cases.

I have handled cases in many different areas of the law over the course of my career including family, business formations and business law in general, personal injury, constitutional law, title work and real estate, traffic and criminal defense, probate law, and class action work.  As a prosecutor for the State, I handled everything from child support enforcement, traffic and misdemeanor prosecution to mental health cases handled out of the Alton Mental Health Hospital. I have also served as City Attorney for Collinsville, Illinois, as Corporate Attorney for Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville and as Zoning Officer for the Village of St. Jacob, Illinois.

My wife Laura and I have been happily married for 24 years.   We started dating during the summer of our sophomore year in high school and have been together ever since.  We have three beautiful children; Jessica who is a 19 year old Honors College student at Missouri University and a twin boy and girl, John and Jordan who are 14 years old and straight “A” students at Triad Middle School.  We are very blessed and proud of all three of our children.
