The County Board's role in in helping reduce property taxes

Summary

What specifically can the County board do to encourage other local governments, especially school districts to hold the line on property taxes.

We must attack it from two fronts. From an internally fiscal responsible standpoint. But also more importantly, an external approach to attracting a growing business community, and finally we must continue to push Springfield to stop the unfunded mandates and to fulfill their fiscal obligations.I would love to see a change in how we fund the schools and their pensions. That, however has to come from Springfield. We need to grow our economies tax base to a better balanced revenue stream between residential, commercial and retail taxes.

I am very familiar with the crushing burden property taxes have placed on families and our senior cirizens. I firmly believe McHenry County has a leadership role in holding the line on property taxes. We must work vigorously with our local governments, especially our school districts in reducing this terrible trend.

I believe a prudent county government can serve as an example to other government agencies to act responsibly on how they run their school boards, townships, villages and city governments.
