Responsible for determining the manner and cause of each death in the county where the decedent was not attended by a licensed physician, and decides if an investigation is necessary. The coroner conducts these investigations and maintains records of the investigations. Also issues death certificates and cremation permits. Where the office of the sheriff or under-sheriff is vacant, the coroner performs all duties of the sheriff until another sheriff is elected or appointed.
